Acciona Engineering Division coordinates, supervises and evaluates the performance of the different District Heating and Cooling demo sites.

Acciona develops the WEDISTRICT assessment tool and model that enable integration of renewable technologies. 

Romanian Branch of Acciona supports the project activities at the Romanian demo site.

Acciona ESCO is responsible for exploitation plan of Spanish demo site and plays the role of industrial operator in the exploitation efforts.

DH Eco Energias

DH ECO ENERGIAS is a leading Spanish company in renewable energy projects, as well as District Heating and Cooling systems in buildings.

Its mission is to change the energy model of cities, based on fossil fuels, into a renewable energy provision of thermal energy.

DH ECO ENERGIAS’ multidisciplinary team has developed more than 1,000 installation projects in the energy field for all types of buildings.

DH ECO ENERGIAS coordinates the Spanish demo site in Alcalá de Henares, from the engineering process to the supervision of the project execution.

DH ECO ENERGIAS creates energy simulation models and will select the best retrofitting package for Poland in terms of energy.

Ramboll

Ramboll is a leading engineering, design and consultancy company from Denmark.

With more than 300 offices in 35 countries, Ramboll combines local experience with a global knowledge base. Ramboll works across seven markets: Buildings, Transport, Planning & Urban Design, Water, Environment & Health, Energy and Management Consulting.

Ramboll Energy’s special competences lie within offshore wind, waste-to-energy, district heating and thermal power.

Ramboll coordinates and develops the project concept design and evaluates the project’s viability.

Ramboll also runs feasibility studies of all four demo sites and gives a general technical consultation.

CEPSA

CEPSA is a Spanish global, integrated company operating across the entire oil and gas value chain that develops its businesses across five continents.

A culture of innovation is part of CEPSA’s DNA. CEPSA uses technology and research to create value, be more competitive, optimise processes and improve the efficiency and quality of its products.

To support its refineries and the rest of the company, CEPSA created a Research Centre located in Alcalá de Henares. This centre is capable of reproducing the processes that CEPSA carries out at its production centres, mainly in refining and chemicals. The research activities are mainly focused in the optimisation of chemical processes, the development of improved and
novel products and identifying novel technological trends.

CEPSA is a demonstration partner of the project in Alcalá de Henares, Spain.

CEPSA uses its equipment (cooling and heating system) to validate the WEDISTRICT technologies and new district heating and cooling. These include three new technologies of solar thermal energy, low emissive biomass boilers and thermal storage (molten salts based and water tank).

UNIVERSITATEA POLITEHNICA DIN BUCUREȘTI

UPB is the largest and the oldest technical university in Romania. It is built upon the work of the nation’s best teachers and generations of students.

UPB conducts analyses, modelling and selection of the optimal solar and geothermal hybridisation for Romanian demo site.

UPB also coordinates and supervises the Romanian demo site.

RISE RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF SWEDEN

RISE is an industrial research institute supporting the data centre industry in innovation and research.

RISE Luleå unit is formed around the creation of a new test data centre in Luleå: It is the world’s first open big-data research data centre for both IT and facility testing and experiments. The research at the institute is focused on the field of heat re-use and circular economy.

RISE is a demonstration partner of the project in Luleå, Sweden.

RISE develops, implements and demonstrates efficient data centre excess heat re-use in a district heating network. The system will be based on temperature chaining that will include liquid cooling and fuel cells used for combined power and heat production.

FUNDACIÓ INSTITUT DE RECERCA EN ENERGIA DE CATALUNYA

The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) is a publicly funded institution based in Barcelona. IREC conducts innovative research over a wide range of disciplines within the science and technology energy field. IREC contributes to sustainable development via development of new technological solutions, promotion of scientific and technological know-how related to clean energy and its efficient use as well transfer of solution and expertise to market actors. The institute also supports the promotion of renewable energy technologies and assists political decision-makers.

IREC coordinates the definition of the concept design and requirements for the technologies, with special focus on key performance indicators. These will be used in the evaluation of the WEDISTRICT technologies and demo sites.

Furthermore, IREC is involved in all the stages of the development and demonstration of the data centres waste heat recovery with fuel cells, in close cooperation with RISE.

Finally, RISE develops energy generation system prediction models in order to minimise the total district system cost.

EUROPEAN SCIENCE & COMMUNICATION INSTITUTE

ESCI is a not-for-profit organisation that empowers scientists and engineers, helping them to communicate with a non-expert audience to bridge the gap between science, technology and society.

ESCI supports national and international research and innovation initiatives in communicating effectively and leveraging their dissemination potential.

In addition to providing up-to-date media training, ESCI has put together a compelling set of dissemination tools specifically with different stakeholders and target audiences in mind.

ESCI leads the communication and dissemination of the project.

During the course of the project, ESCI will identify the communication needs for specific audiences, find and use the channels of communication needed to reach them.

Furthermore, ESCI experts help local partners to engage with the local communities and develop a dialogue with the citizens to ensure the successful implementation of the WEDISTRICT technologies.

RESEARCH TO MARKET SOLUTIONS

LATERIZI GAMBETTOLA SRL. SOLTIGUA

Soltigua specialises in designing and manufacturing concentrating collectors for industrial processes.

It is the only company worldwide offering both parabolic troughs and Fresnel concentrators for medium temperature applications (50-250°C) optimised for solar district and cooling applications.

Soltigua improves the cost and the environmental sustainability of its parabolic trough collectors by improving the control and power supply and the structural components.
Soltigua participates in the studies of integration of molten salts technologies with solar collectors that will be tested at real scale in the Spanish demo site.

Soltigua also contributes to exploitation activities.

SEENSO RENOVAL

Seenso is a company with more than ten years of experience in the renewable energy, energy efficiency, facilities, engineering and maintenance sector. Its extensive experience has allowed it to develop and design appropriate technology and services for each client, innovating and developing future technologies.

SEENSO designs, constructs, tests and evaluates low concentration flat collectors.

Seenso tests the efficiency of the developed panels at real scale in the Spanish demo site.

Seenso also participates in the new absorption chiller optimisation, modelling the integration of this technology in the district cooling of Spanish demo site.

CIRCULAR ENERGY RESOURCES LTD

CER has its origins in the joint venture of companies that have been developing renewable energy projects for over 20 years.

CER specialises in technologies and solutions for creating energy from renewable sources and using waste for electricity and heat production.

CER researches and develops technical improvements to take advantage of non-recyclable materials.

The systems are a hygienic way of waste treatment medium.

CER uses the most appropriate technology to value the fuel using the waste that cannot be recycled and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions.

CER is responsible for designing and building a very low NOx emission boiler, making use of new furnace geometries to improve current results. The aim is to bring them closer to natural gas NOx emissions.

CER uses new NOx abatement technologies like catalytic bag filters.

Fertiberia

Fertiberia is a leader fertiliser company in the EU. It offers modern, evolved and adapted products to the needs of the farmers and the industry.

The research activity covers industrial, agricultural and environmental projects. This is done by improving efficiency in energy and raw materials consumption as well as the development of new production technologies and processes.

Fertiberia is involved in development and supply of the molten salt formulations adapted to the specific needs of the project.

Fertiberia also participates in the study and production of the optimised molten salt, as well as in the evaluation of the performance of the molten salt- thermocline tank in the Spanish demo site.

UNIVERSIDAD DE CÓRDOBA

UCO is committed to promotion of innovation, research and technological development as an instrument for the social and economic progress.

The research efforts of the University are done in 193 research units, covering a variety of disciplines, including environmental sciences and applied thermodynamics.

UCO is responsible for the design and testing of the novel air-cooling unit based on renewable energy.

UCO also contributes to the implementation and performance evaluation of this air-cooling unit at the demo site in Alcalá.

INSTITUTUL DE STUDII SI PROIECTARI ENERGETICE S.A.

ISPE is a private Romanian company that delivers strategic consulting & engineering services.

Through its projects, ISPE practically developed the entire Romanian energy system, from the power and heat generation sources, up to transmission and distribution networks and end-consumers.

ISPE provides innovative and sustainable solutions in the field of low energy and carbon neutral technologies, aiming to increase the energy efficiency in buildings, district heating systems and industry.

ISPE is responsible for the design and engineering of the retrofitting project of the District Heating of University of Bucharest with geothermal and solar energy.

ISPE supervises the installation works in the demo site of Bucharest as project engineers.

Additionally, ISPE provides their expertise in technical and economic integrated analyses of investments.

AALBORG CSP

Aalborg is a leading developer and supplier of innovative renewable technologies aiming to change the way energy is produced today.

Relying on extensive experience from some of the most efficient concentrated solar power projects around the world, Aalborg designs and delivers green technologies and integrated energy systems with lower cost of energy for industries and power plants worldwide.

Aalborg developed the next generation of Thermal Energy Storage concepts, allowing wind- and solar energy to be stored at the lowest possible cost.

Aalborg is the main integrator of solar technologies within the project.

Additionally, Aalborg contributes to the simulation models of the virtual demos, especially to the integration of solar energy.

UNIVERSIDAD POLITÉCNICA DE MADRID

UPM is the largest Spanish technological university specialised in all engineering fields and architecture.

The department of Energy Engineering provides its expertise in the field of integration and simulation of hybrid energy systems. Its experience includes evaluation of hybrid solar plant analysis, exergy analysis, cogeneration, thermal boilers and thermal storage.

The research group involved in the project has several patents and high-ranked journal papers in the field.

UPM is the main developer of simulation models for the integration and design of the proposed facilities in the demo sites in Spain, Romania and Poland, as well as virtual demos.

PGNiG TERMIKA ENERGETYKA ROZPROSZONA SP.

PTER is the biggest supplier of gas on the Polish market.

PTER is a specialised organisational unit for developing, executing, operating and maintenance heating projects, including cogeneration and heat-only stations, heating substations and heating grids.

PTER has a track record in successful development of small- and medium sized bespoke heating solutions.

Until March 2023 PTER lead the Polish demo site study, being responsible for the retrofitting of the Polish thermal plant with renewable technology (biomass and solar).

Additionally, PTER contributed to the development of the exploitation plan of the Polish business case. Unfortunately, the Polish demo site had to be cancelled in 2022.

KRAJOWA AGENCJA POSZANOWANIA ENERGII S.A.

KAPE holds a leading position among the companies that provide specialised auditing services to enterprises and public sector within the energy sector in Poland.

KAPE offers complex advisory and training services in the fields of energy efficiency and sustainable development.

It supports the competitive growth of the Polish economy through improving its energy efficiency.

KAPE acts as technical and engineering partner for the Polish demo site.

KAPE supervises the refurbishment works in Polish district heating and evaluate its performance.

Additionally, KAPE participates in other project tasks in order to exchange experience with other demo sites.

AMERICAN AIR FILTER S.A.

AAF provides solutions for the air quality improvement, ensuring environmental protection of people, products and processes.

As the world leading manufacturer of air pollution control products and systems, AAF markets its air pollution control and machinery intake products and systems globally. This global presence enables AAF to act locally, utilising the resources and cross border experience with product sourcing and engineering services worldwide. This results in air pollution control systems operating in almost every nation of the world.

Until March 2023,  AAF provided its filters for the boiler exhaust gases to ensure the required emissions level in the boiler exhaust gases.

UNIVERSITAT ROVIRA I VIRGILI

Universitat Rovira I Virgili (URV) is a young University placed in Tarragona, Spain. The CREVER – Group of Research in Applied Thermal Engineering is a multidisciplinary research group from URV devoted to the research and development of new technologies in renewable energies and energy efficiency. The CREVER Research Group has a wide expertise on absorption chillers and heat pump technology.

For the WeDistrict project, URV will develop and test a new absorption heat pump with condensation heat recovery.

URV also contributes to the implementation and the performance evaluation of this absorption heat pump at Alcalá demo site.
